Explore Animal Science with Massey University’s new 2020 Bachelor of Animal Science.

Leading animal science in New Zealand – The Bachelor of Animal Science is the only animal science degree available in New Zealand.

Offered at Massey University from 2020 you will gain in-depth expertise, learning about the latest developments in animal science from our world leading veterinary, animal and agricultural science professionals. The degree will have a distinct New Zealand flavour and complement established international animal science programmes. This allows you, if you’d like, to study part of your programme overseas.

Specialise in one of four majors:

  • Animal Genetics and Breeding – by gaining an understanding of breeding and genetics, you can help improve the performance of animals including production, sport and companion animals.
  • Animal Nutrition and Growth – you will learn about the dietary requirements of animals and how to formulate balanced diets for the optimum health and performance of animals.
  • Animal Welfare – this specialisation is the only dedicated Animal Welfare major offered in Australasia. You will learn about how animal welfare is scientifically assessed and how humans-animal interactions influence the productivity and welfare of animals.
  • Equine Science – the role of the horse is diverse, production animal through to companion animal and sporting athlete. The equine major will prepare you for a career in the varied equine enterprises, anywhere in the world.

Internationally recognised expertise.

Massey has a number of internationally recognised animal-based research centres including: Al Rae Genetics Centre, Animal Welfare Science and Bioethics Centre, Centre for Feline Nutrition, Equine Parentage, Equine Research Centre, International Sheep Research Centre, Monogastric Research Centre and Working Dog Centre. These centres are used to enhance the learning experience throughout the degree.
